I am always given a friendly greeting by everyone and never have to wait past my appointment time. "Going to the dentist" is not my favorite pastime, but I am very pleased with the kind of care I receive and never considered putting off "going to the dentist." I have never considered going elsewhere. – Alice
Finding Problems Before They Happen
Because your oral health is directly connected to whole body health, your dental exams are extremely important. We suggest every three to six months so that we can screen for early signs of periodontal disease, oral cancer, TMJ, and even the earliest signs of tooth decay.
Our advanced technology, such as intra-oral cameras and Panoramic radiography, allows you and the doctor to see what is happening in your mouth with much more detail and accuracy than dental films alone.
Gentle, Comfortable Teeth Cleaning
Our hygienists are highly trained and have excellent clinical skills to assure comfort and precision. Their training and continuing education also allows them to screen you for oral cancer and other potential problems while they clean your teeth.
Regular cleanings make your smile shine! They eliminate a build-up of stains, keep your gums in top shape and clear away harmful bacteria. Consistent dental cleanings help keep your teeth and gums healthy and can even aid in the reduction of your risk for heart disease and strokes.
Professional Treatment of Gum Disease
Even the most attractive smiles are at risk of gum disease. Today, over 85 percent of the population has some form of periodontal (gum) disease. However, most people don’t realize they have it.
The problem is that periodontal disease often shows up with no symptoms at all. Gums may recede, leaving teeth vulnerable to decay, abscesses and loss – without any bleeding, tenderness or other indications of a problem.
Worst of all, periodontal disease can affect the health of your whole body. The pockets of bacteria hiding below the gumline can increase the risk of heart attacks and can affect diabetes. How? Oral bacteria that enter the bloodstream may cause the liver to produce more proteins such as C-reactive protein, one of the known factors in many diseases. A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine identified elevated CRP levels as a stronger predictor of heart attacks than elevated cholesterol levels.
But there is good news. Gum disease is easily treatable, even reversible.

Screenings Can Save a Life – Maybe Yours!
Oral cancer strikes an estimated 34,360 Americans each year. That’s why we take oral cancer screening so seriously – we want to detect the earliest signs of cancer and pre-cancerous conditions when the opportunity for a cure is great.
We will screen you at every hygiene visit. We use an advanced system with fluorescence technology that shines a blue light that can identify abnormal lesions at an earlier stage! Together we can stop this deadly disease before it even starts. We watch for the tiniest pre-malignant changes and lesions that present without symptoms and cannot be felt or noticed. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread. Our screening methods are quick, easy and painless.
Protect and Strengthen Your Teeth with Fluoride Treatments
Every day your teeth lose some of their protective minerals. When we consume acidic foods or drinks, fail to brush as well as we should or even when we become stressed, enamel is damaged. One way to help strengthen your teeth and reverse this damage is through remineralizing fluoride treatments. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral famed for its benefits in fighting tooth decay.
Long considered mainly for children – for whom we recommend fluoride at every visit – fluoride treatments have been proven tremendously beneficial for adults as well. Fluoride stops the progress of newly formed cavities and adult root decay can be greatly reduced through fluoride treatments.
Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. In children under six years of age, fluoride becomes incorporated into the development of permanent teeth.
Protect Your Child's Teeth
Some types of teeth need a little more care and attention than others. Most people, for example, have deep grooves and fissures in the chewing surfaces of their back teeth. These grooves collect plaque and keep it there. Since the bacteria found in dental plaque causes tooth decay, the longer plaque remains on a tooth’s surface the more likely it will be to eventually form a cavity. By bonding sealants of plastic resin into the grooves, we make the surface of your tooth smoother and so much easier to clean. This is an especially important procedure for children who tend not to brush well enough or have history of dental cavities.
Sports Mouthguards Can Save a Smile
Your child's smile is precious. But every year, more than 3.5 million children 14 and under are injured while playing sports. That is why the American Dental Association recommends that all kids participating in sports wear a protective mouthguard.
Mouthguards help cushion blows that might otherwise cause broken teeth, and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw. They also may reduce the severity and incidence of concussions.
In their continued effort to support the community, Dr. von Hoven is a provider of free sport mouthguards for Highland Athletics. This community donation reaches numerous student athletes to provide them with the protective mouthguard our doctors know is so valuable. We love protecting all those wonderful smiles!
Comfortable, Easy Treatment of Abcessed Teeth
This treatment could save your tooth! Your teeth are not solid. Inside every tooth there is a hollow area that contains blood vessel, tissue and nerves. If these tissues become diseased or injured they may become infected, causing pain or loss of the tooth if not treated with a root canal.
A root canal removes the diseased tissue, the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. We then place a crown to make your tooth strong and healthy, and to keep out bacteria. Patients are pleased at how easy a root canal can be.
Brilliant White Teeth
You see them everywhere – dazzling, white smiles. They look fresh, healthy and subtly glamorous. Now you can have one of those astounding smiles too.
If you’re like most of our patients, you want a simple way to whiten your smile. With take home trays, you can get professional results any time, anywhere. We make a mold of your teeth and then custom – create trays to fit your mouth. Just fill the trays with the prescription strength gel and whiten!
Silver Fillings Are a Thing of the Past!
We offer tooth colored, mercury-free dentistry to restore your teeth as an alternative to metal fillings that can crack and promote decay.
Our bonded tooth colored restorations make it possible to beautifully repair and restore the normal structure of your teeth. While amalgam fillings are forced into the damaged area, often after extensive drilling. Bonded restorations make it possible to make a stronger repair – able to withstand up to 75 percent more chewing force than traditional fillings – while removing less of your natural tooth.

Do You Grind Your Teeth?
Sometimes chronic stress or medical conditions can cause people to develop a damaging habit known as bruxism or teeth grinding. Bruxism is unconsciously clenching or grinding down with too much force at times when you wouldn’t normally be chewing or biting anything, such as when you are sleeping or working. It can happen night or day and is quite common in most of the population, most frequently among women.
Bruxism, can cause a variety of problems, from wearing down your teeth to jaw disorders and chronic headaches. We can fit you with a custom-made night guard appliance that will reduce the damage to your teeth from grinding or clenching during sleep, and reduce grinding-related symptoms. The more you wear your appliance, the more you protect your teeth – and your restorations!
